Early prevention
Q. I'm getting married next year, but I'm worried because my mother who is 74, has become increasingly hunched and has been diagnosed with Dowager's Hump. I have recently noticed some pain in a similar area in my back and wonder what the likelihood is of me developing this condition in the short-term?
A. Christina Hood says: Firstly, don't panic. Just because your mother has it, it doesn't mean you will. It may simply be that your back pain is due to bad posture and poor mechanics. Dowager's Hump is the result of a fracture of one of the vertebrae in the spine, caused by advanced osteoporosis. The key is to avoid developing osteoporosis in the first place, and there's a lot you can do now to help yourself by addressing your lifestyle, diet and exercise. Seeing somebody like an osteopath may well put your mind at rest on that front, and he or she will be able to offer advice on prevention. |
